Key Points

  • Seat belts are designed for adults. Children must use booster seats until they are 9 years of age unless they have reached the height of 145 cm (4' 9") tall.
  • Seat belt use is required by law in British Columbia.
  • Seat belts must always be used correctly to ensure your child is safe.
  • The back seat is the safest place.
  • Always choose a seating position in your vehicle with a combined lap and shoulder belt and a head rest.

Seat belt safety tips

Seat belts must be used correctly to ensure your child is as safe as possible. Use the following checklist:

  • Lap belt is snug across the hips — not the abdomen.
  • Shoulder belt is snug across the chest and middle of the shoulder — never behind the back or under the arm.
  • Seat belt remains fastened on every trip.
  • Never restrain more than one child in a seat belt.
